Like many little girls I had always dreamed of riding bareback and bridleless with the wind blowing in mane and hair - in reality, once I was in a job and could afford to learn to ride, I found horses were slippery bareback and I was told that the more leather gadgets you tied them in the better. In this way I proceeded into local show jumping classes, dressage and XC. As time went by I still felt there had to be something 'better' out there and having grown up a tom boy and in love with the 'wild west' I had a real soft spot for the Quarter Horse. I finally made the decision to ride and compete Western when I watched a lady giving a bridleless display - now this was more like it. At that time, there were other things that were not going right for me with horses and when Pat Parelli came to give a demo about 5 minutes from my house - I was hooked. Five years later, I have moved myself and a horse to South Africa and set up a guest lodge specialising in horse related courses including getting overseas NH instructors to bring their latest ideas to South Africans. More and more people have come to find us and I regularly help people with their horsemanship. We are developing a groom school and I have had the honour to teach and put through the NH programme, the first two black grooms in SA - one man and one woman. When I came across Silversand NH I was struck by their friendliness, openness and desire to really help wherever it was needed. There has been no hesitation in their commitment to SA and at the beginning of 2005 I had the pleasure of spending almost 4 weeks with Steve and Irena and some of their Associates and students. Never have I been made to feel so welcome by people I had never previously met and the learning experience was incredible. My aim is to pass on how to have a really harmonious relationship with our horses and to offer this in a system of support that reaches out across SA.
